Course Entry Requirements:
A grade 5 in in Languages
General Course Description:
The MFL department is able to offer EITHER French A level OR Spanish A level, depending on numbers of pupils interested in the course.
The A Level course builds on the knowledge and skills gained at GCSE.
Students will:
• enhance their linguistic skills and their ability to interact with native speakers in speech and in writing
• enhance their capacity for critical thinking
• engage with texts, films and other materials in French or Spanish
• develop knowledge about French-or Spanish-speaking society and culture
• foster their language acquisition skills and consequently their ability to learn other languages
• develop transferable skills that will enable them to proceed to further study or to employment

FRENCH A-LEVEL
Topics studied in year 12 and 13
Family, cyber-society, voluntary work, heritage, contemporary francophone music, cinema, positive features of a diverse society, life for the marginalised, how criminals are treated, teenagers- the right to vote and political commitment, demonstrations, strikes.
SPANISH A-LEVEL
Topics studied in year 12 and 13:
Modern and traditional values, Cyberspace, Equal rights, Immigration, Racism Integration of cultures and religions, modern day idols, Spanish regional identity, Cultural heritage, Monarchies, youth culture, popular movements
How are the A levels for French/Spanish assessed?
Paper 1: Listening, Reading and Writing. Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes - 50% of A-level
Paper 2: Writing -.2 hours. One text and one film - 20% of A Level
Paper 3 Speaking – Oral examination lasting 21-23 minutes - 30% of A-level. In this examination you will discuss your research of a topic chosen by yourself.
Career Pathways
In addition to the career pathways traditionally available to linguists (Translators/Interpreters/Teachers), students with language proficiency (even as a subsidiary qualification) are highly sought after by employers in a wide variety of sectors e.g. Engineering, Business and Finance, Media, Law, Diplomatic Service and Tourism.
