SAINT Curriculum
All parts of the SAINT programme are rooted in gospel values and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
We aspire to emulate the Catholic saints by living out the Gospel values. We are guided by the mission of the church to love and serve others and to use our God-given talents wisely. Saints are found in every walk of life. A person can turn from a life of sin and become a saint. Saint Mother Teresa - echoing the message of Jesus - stated that all of us are called to be saints.
This pastoral curriculum allows pupils to explore aspects of the modern world and encourages challenging conversations and debate. The saint curriculum encourages pupils to open their hearts and minds and consider what Jesus would have done.
SAINT Curriculum Overview:
At Bishop Walsh Catholic School, we structure our personal development and well-being sessions through a SAINT curriculum where pupils receive 30 minutes per day exploring a range of PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education), Citizenship and RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education) topics. This pastoral curriculum allows pupils to explore aspects of the modern world and encourages challenging conversations and debate. The SAINT curriculum encourages pupils to open their hearts and minds and consider what Jesus would have done. Each letter in SAINT represents an aspect of the pastoral curriculum which is explored on different days:
S stands for SMSVC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Vocational and Cultural Education) through reflective thinking sessions,
A refers to Assemblies where a range of topics are explored,
I stands for Investing in me/ character education - form group activities
N links to News - world and liturgical news,
T refers to Ten Ten sessions – Relationships, Sex and Health Education through Ten Ten resources
(S)SMSVC
SMSVC is an abbreviation for Spiritual, Moral, Social, Vocational and Cultural Development.
SMSVC days will involve presenting and discussing age appropriate issues from a range of topics. These include: Careers, First Aid, Financial literacy, Cultural Capital, Crime, God’s Creation /Environmental issues and more. The SMSVC curriculum is progressive from year 7 to 13 alongside spiritual reflections based on the liturgical calendar.
(A)Assembly
The assembly rota is informed by the liturgical calendar and the key church teachings;
*Treat others as you would like to be treated.
*Each person was created by God, love willed and necessary
*Jesus died on the cross to set us free from anything we have done and anything we do wrong
*We are all called to love and respect everyone as a child of God
*Life is precious and should be protected
*God has a plan which is full of hope and happiness for each person
All assemblies have dedicated prayer/ reflection time (sacred space), a theme, scripture and reflective questions.
Assembly themes range from Safeguarding, British Values, Teaching and Learning, topical issues and the liturgical calendar.
(I) character education
The 'Investing In Me' programme for Year 8-11 focuses on Character Education. This involves teaching behaviour as a curriculum. The school covers 6 key character themes across the academic year including; responsibility, empathy, humility, self regulation, resilience and courage. The programme covers a range of topics linked directly to these character themes across a pupils' school career including; character themes and relationships, character themes and careers and character themes and flourishing as an individual.
(N) News
NEWS day is a way of developing the pupils’ cultural capital by exploring the global and church news. It is organised by Chaplain Lead who resources the session based on current affairs, world news and liturgical news.
(T) Ten Ten - Relationships and Sex Education
Ten Ten’s programme, Life to the Full, teaches Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) within the context of a Christian understanding of human sexuality rooted in the wisdom and teaching of the Catholic Church.
Given that RSHE is a statutory subject for all schools, we are embracing “the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life” by giving pupils knowledge “that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships” (DFE Statutory Guidance).
We will deliver this teaching through the prism of Catholic RSHE. The framework of our programme is taken from the Model Catholic RSE Programme by the Catholic Education Service, which has been highlighted by the Department of Education as a work of good practice.
Each year group has a bespoke set of RSHE resources based on the resources created by Ten Ten including PowerPoints, videos and tasks. Pupils will use an exercise book for these sessions.
