KS4
Intent and Knowledge Entitlement:
GCSE Media at Bishop Walsh aims to prepare them for media they will engage in, ignite interest with future employment of media and enrich their knowledge and understanding of key media texts. The intention with year KS4 is to prepare students to respond successfully to the theoretical framework Media Language, Audience, Industry and Representation. From the beginning of their GCSE we will teach key terminology, explore media theories, different contexts that impact media. The students will also explore a wide range of media forms from both analytical and creative perspectives to prepare them well for their GCSE.
Throughout their curriculum the students will be consistently reflecting upon the representations constructed and how they appeal to the target audience. Topics covered in year 9 are print (magazine and newspaper), NEA creating media (whereby they create a range of original media products), Science Fiction genre, TV industry and shows, Social and participatory media leading onto a set exam text of The Lego Movie, video game and promotional methods. In year 10 the students will go onto explore Music Videos, Radio and MOJO music magazine then finishing the year starting their NEA task in response to an externally set brief. In their final year the students will complete their NEA task, leading onto TV exploring modern show Cuffs (BBC) and historical show The Avengers (ITV). Newspapers online, social and participatory media will be the last scheme and set text to be explored. The students then revise in preparation for their external exams.
Skills Entitlement:
Throughout the GCSE students will be given the opportunity to develop and improve exam writing skills and practical skills. Exam style questions will be utilised throughout the course, practical skills will be specifically explored in year 9 through the following schemes term 1- print, magazine and music videos and term 3- Social and Participatory Media and website design. These opportunities will provide the students with the skills to carry out their coursework task at the end of year 10.
